India: Civil Aircraft Were Subject To Navigation Interference

In India, some passenger aircraft were subject to falsified global positioning system (GPS) data and navigation interference.

According to a report in India Today, passenger aircraft using various airports, including the capital New Delhi, were found to have been subjected to “fake GPS-based landing procedures.”

GPS interference was reported on flights departing from airports in Kolkata, Amritsar, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.

An investigation by the Ministry of Civil Aviation found that aircraft subjected to GPS signal spoofing and navigation interference were subject to “emergency procedures.”

Instructions sent to the Ministry of Transport’s Wireless Monitoring Organization (WMO) asked to “mobilize additional resources to determine the source of the spoofing.”

GPS spoofing is defined as “spoofing” existing GPS receiver” by transmitting fake signals configured to look like normal GPS signals.
