IOM: Number Of Internally Displaced People In City Of El Fasher In Sudan Approaches 89 Thousand

After the city of El Fasher, the administrative center of North Darfur province in western Sudan, came under the control of the Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) on October 26, the number of internally displaced people reached 88,892.

As reported by the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM), the statistics cover the number of people displaced from El Fasher and surrounding villages.

The IOM indicated serious security threats to field teams in travel routes, which significantly complicates evacuation. The situation remains extremely tense and unstable, and the flow of displaced persons continues, the statement emphasized.

The conflict in Sudan and the violations of the RRF

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in violent clashes between the army and the RRF. As a result of the conflict, more than 14 million people have been forced to flee their homes, becoming internally displaced or refugees outside the country.

The Sudanese army has regained control of the capital Khartoum and the central regions, while the RRF has concentrated its forces in the west of the country.

The RRF controls the administrative centers of four of the five provinces of the Darfur region. El Fasher, the largest city in the Darfur region, has largely fallen under the control of the RRF after intense fighting.

Tens of thousands of residents have fled the city to escape the violence. Video recordings published by the SBR depict cases of forced eviction of civilians, murders and torture of unarmed people.
