The director general of the Iranian Water Supply and Sewerage Authority, Ali Seyidzadeh, reported a severe drought in the country.
Speaking on Iranian state television, the official said that 67% of Iran’s reservoirs remained empty in October, and 15 provinces had no rainfall.
According to Seyidzadeh, only 2.2 millimeters of rain fell across the country in October.
“67% of our reservoirs” remain unfilled. The lack of rainfall in 15 provinces is a serious concern. Last year, during the same period, rainfall fell by 77% compared to the long-term norm, and by 83% compared to last year,” the official said.
Water losses in pipeline systems are about 15%, the use of water-saving equipment can reduce consumption by up to 30%, he said. also noted that current water tariffs in Iran are not a deterrent. New measures will be introduced, providing for increased tariffs for subscribers who consume excessive amounts of water, he added.
