Italian President made visit to Chile

Italian President Sergio Mattarell, as part of his official visit to Chile, met with the country’s president Gabriel Borich.

The official meeting of the president of Italy took place in the La Moneda Palace in Santiago.

The heads of state discussed relations between the European Union and Latin America, the energy transition, climate change and economic cooperation.

Having addressed a press conference following the results of the negotiations, Mattarell expressed satisfaction with a visit to Chile.

“50 years ago in Italy there was a large and painful revolution. Italians took the incident in Chile with the same feelings. Democracy in Chile has strengthened and this creates a strong connection between Chile and Italy,” he said.

According to him, Italy plans to actively cooperate with Chile. “I am sure that the dialogue between Latin America and the EU will be crucial for the global balance based on peace and cooperation,” Mattarella said.

Mattarella noted that the upcoming summit in Brussels between the EU and the countries of the Commonwealth of Latin American and Caribbean states (CELAC) will become decisive not only for the continent, but for the whole world.

Following the results of the negotiations, Italy and Chili signed two memorandum of understanding of “development and diplomatic exchange”.
