Japan: annual snow festival “Yuki-Matsuri” was opened

In the city of Sapporo the Province of Hokkaido in northern Japan, the annual winter festival “Yuki-Matsuri” was opened.

One of the largest winter events of the country has been online for the past three years or with restrictions due to the coronavirus infection Covid-19.

This year, epidemic restrictions were finally removed, the traditional platforms of the park with entertainment, kiosks with food and souvenirs were returned.

The festival, at which 190 snow sculptures will be presented, including those that exceed a height of ten meters, will last until February 11. The sites are organized in three areas of the city.

Among the works are the worldly recognized sculptures of the heroes of popular Japanese cartoons, as well as the heroes of the local people of Aino on Hokkaido.

“Yuki Matsuri” has been held since the 1950s and is considered an integral part of the cultural life of Sapporo.

The main event of the year annually attracts more than two million local and foreign tourists to the city.
