North-eastern Japan was hit by a mild tsunami after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Iwate Prefecture.
According to Kyodo News, citing the Japan Meteorological Agency, after a tsunami warning was issued, residents of coastal areas of Iwate Prefecture were advised to leave their homes.
Waves of about 20 cm in height were recorded in the cities of Kuji and Ofunato. and in Miyako and Kamaishi – about 10 cm.
Due to power outages, some high-speed trains were temporarily stopped. The tsunami warning and evacuation orders were later canceled.
However, as noted, no injuries or damage were reported as a result of the earthquake.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was 126 km east of the Yamada area off the coast of Iwate Prefecture.
