Kazakhstan celebrates 32nd anniversary of closure of Semipalatinsk training ground

In Kazakhstan, the 32nd anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk training ground is celebrated.

August 29, 1991 in the republic decided to close a training ground with a fourth largest arsenal of weapons of mass destruction.

At the initiative of Kazakhstan, the UN announced on August 29 an international day of actions against nuclear tests. This day has been celebrated annually since 2010. Since then, Kazakhstan has made denuclearization one of the key issues of his foreign policy.

In the Republic on the occasion of International Day of Actions against Nuclear Testing, various events are held.

as part of events that will continue within a week, various seminars and exhibitions are organized in educational and public institutions.

The construction of the training ground was launched in 1947 during the Soviet Union and completed in two years.

The landfill is located in Kazakhstan on the border of the Semipalatinsk (now Abay), Pavlodar and Karaganda regions, 130 kilometers northwest of Semipalatinsk (now Semey), on the left bank of the Irtysh River. Its area occupies 18 thousand km².

Over 40 years, 456 nuclear tests were conducted at the Semipalatinsk nuclear training ground.

The last nuclear test at the training ground was carried out on October 19, 1989.
