Kazakhstan: new protests predicted

The confrontation between the President of Kazakhstan Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev and the first chapter of the Republic of Nursultan Nazarbayev can become a “powder barrel” and lead to another unrest when “one match can blow up society,” the ex-candidate of President Amirzhan Kosanov told NSN.

At the beginning of 2023, the parliament will consider the law “On the First President of Kazakhstan – Elbasy.” If he loses strength, Nazarbayev may appear before the court, Kosanov said. The politician added that Nazarbayev also has compromising evidence for Tokayev, so he did not rule out that winter in Kazakhstan would be “hot”.

Kosanov suggested that the confrontation between the current president and his predecessor will lead to certain political cataclysms. But he noted that 90% of the current elite is still connected with Nazarbayev and the ex-president retains his influence.

“This can become a powder barrel, which can lead to the next unrest, one match can blow up society,” Kosanov said.
