Latvia refuses Russian sector in schools

The Latvian Seims adopted amendments to the Law “On Education”, implying a complete transition of teaching in schools and kindergartens of the country to the Latvian language from the 2025-2026 academic year, DELFI reports.

According to the new version of the law, the transition will take place over three years. The first, fourth and seventh grades will completely switch to the Latvian language from September 1, 2023, the second, fifth and eighth – from September 1, 2024, and the remaining classes – from September 1, 2025.

According to the publication, the Russian language as part of the educational process will receive the status of a “language of national minorities”. In most schools, the study of the Russian language and literature will become optional.
