Latvia will take on mission of NATO to patrol airspace of Baltic Sea of Baltic

Latvia from Tuesday, January ninth, gradually adopts the NATO mission to patrol the Baltic Airspace and will carry out it while repairing the Estonian Air Force in Emari is underway. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Latvia.

In the near future, the soldiers of the German armed forces and military aircraft who will begin testing flights will arrive in Latvia. From March 1, the air base of the National Armed Forces in Lyulevard will support the mission on a rotational basis for nine months.

Since 2004, patrols have been carried out from the Shyaulyay air base in Lithuania, and since 2014, the support mission has been carried out on the basis of Emari in Estonia. For the first time in the order of rotation, the mission will go to Latvia.

NATO countries patrolling the airspace of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia in the order of rotation since March 2004, when the Baltic countries were admitted to the Alliance.

Due to the conflict of the Russian Federation and Ukraine, the fighters of the countries-Sanctor countries also patrol the airspace near the border of Russia and Belarus. Since March last year, NATO has strengthened the protection of airspace, increased the number of soldiers and fighters, the department notes.

The Ministry of Defense warned citizens that in the near future the Allies would more often see and hear in the airspace of Latvia.
