Law on First President was canceled in Kazakhstan

The Constitutional Court of Kazakhstan decided that the Law “On the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Elbasy (Leader of the Nation)” was recognized as lost. The corresponding resolution is published on the website of the Constitutional Court of the Republic.

In addition, the judges of the CS considered that “the preservation of this constitutional law in the current legislation is not consistent with the updated version of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan”.

Law “On the First President” was adopted in 2000. According to him, Nursultan Nazarbayev, who is the title of Elbasy, is in a special position – the first president cannot be detained, arrest, search, call for interrogations and detain. The law guarantees the inviolability of property and bank accounts belonging to Nazarbayev and his family members. All of them are provided with lifelong security, communication, transport and other privileges. On June 5, a referendum was held in the country on amendments to the Basic Law. One of the changes was the exclusion of the article on the status and powers of Nazarbayev, as well as the provisions that allowed him to be elected to the post of head of state more than two times in a row. In addition, the norm was excluded on the invariability of Nazarbayev’s status as a leader of the nation. The amendments supported 77.18% of the voters.
