An agreement was signed between Lebanon and the Greek administration of Southern Cyprus to limit maritime jurisdictional zones.
The signing ceremony, which took place at the Baabda Palace in the capital Beirut, was attended by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Lebanese Minister of Construction and Transport Fayez Rasamini and the leader of the Greek Administration of Southern Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides.
After the ceremony, Aoun expressed his words at a joint press conference. satisfaction with the signing of the agreement.
The President said that thanks to the agreement, “Lebanon and the Greek administration will have the opportunity to explore marine resources and develop joint cooperation in this area.”
Thanking everyone who participated in the preparation of the agreement, Aoun noted that “after determining the maritime boundaries, it will be possible to seriously begin developing bilateral agreements that will facilitate the work of companies engaged in exploration.”
According to him, the parties will be able to implement joint projects with in the field of energy, communications infrastructure, tourism and Defense: “Our cooperation is not directed against anyone and does not exclude anyone. It does not seek to create obstacles for any neighbor, friend or partner.”
Christodoulides, in turn, said that the agreement strengthens cooperation between the parties.
The agreement strengthens opportunities for energy cooperation in the Middle East and will allow the region to become an alternative energy corridor for Europe. He said that in the near future they will contact the World Bank to prepare a feasibility study on connecting Lebanon to a single power grid.
At a meeting on October 23, the Lebanese government approved an agreement with the Greek administration on the delimitation of maritime zones.
