The new president of South Korea was Lee Zhe Meun from the opposition democratic party. He won the early elections, appointed after removal from the post of former head of state, Yun Sok Yol. This was reported by the Central Election Commission of the country.
According to official results, Lee scored 49.42% of the vote. His main rival, the candidate of the ruling party “Power of the people” Kim Moon Su – received 41.15%.
Since the elections were held in connection with the impeachment of the current president, Lee Zhe Meun immediately took office, without a transition period. The powers of the head of state, including the leadership of the armed forces, he received from the acting president – Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Ju Ho.
The ceremony of taking the oath of the new president will take place today at 11:00 local time in the National Assembly.
Yun Sok Yol, who served as president, on December 3, 2024 declared martial law in the country, accusing the opposition of “anti -state activities”. However, the parliament canceled this decision, and the Cabinet of Ministers approved it, which forced Yun to retreat.
December 14, 2024, the National Assembly voted for impeachment. Before the final verdict of the Constitutional Court, Yun was temporarily suspended from office.
On April 4, the court approved the decision of the parliament and admitted that the actions of Yuna to introduce martial law became the basis for its displacement. After that, it was decided to hold early elections within 60 days, and the Cabinet of Ministers appointed them on June 3.
