The Lithuanian authorities expressed concern to Washington’s decision to suspend the supply of part of the promised weapons to Ukraine and intend to discuss the current situation with representatives of the United States. This was reported by the Lithuanian edition of Delfi with reference to statements by the Foreign Minister of the Foreign Ministry of Lithuania Kasytutis Budris.
“We did not receive any additional signals from the new administration [US] that they intend to provide additional support,” the minister said.
Nevertheless, the head of the foreign policy of the foreign policy emphasized that the existing assistance remains extremely important, especially in the field of air defense.
Budris noted that Lithuania plans to negotiate with the United States on the transfer of additional air defense systems, missiles and other critical resources to Ukraine.
“Lithuania supported, supported and will support Ukraine. This is true and from the point of view of morality and from the point of view of our national interests. We will continue to fulfill the obligations, including within the framework of ten years of support, and we will call for other EU partners,” Budris said, adding that he will raise this issue at the next meeting of the EU Council for Foreign Affairs.
The minister also emphasized that even if deliveries from the United States are not completely restored, other NATO countries are able to provide significant assistance to Kyiv.
According to him, excluding Washington, allies in alliance this year plan to allocate about 35 billion euros to Ukraine, which is almost comparable to last year’s obligations at the Summit in Washington.
Earlier, the White House announced the temporary suspension of a number of military supplies, including ammunition and air defense systems, which caused anxiety in Kyiv.
Ukraine’s representatives said they were trying to get explanations from Washington and have already handed over to American diplomats a position on the “critical importance” of ongoing support.
