Magate Gained Access For Conducting Inspections Of Nuclear Facilities In Syria

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossy said that the Syrian transition to the agency provided access to the inspections of “suspicious” nuclear facilities in the country. He reported this in an interview with Associated Press after meeting with Syria President Ahmed al-Sharaa and other high-ranking officials in Damascus.

“As an agency, we strive to achieve complete clarity regarding some types of activities that, in our opinion, were associated with a nuclear program in the past,” said Grossy.

He emphasized that no signs of radiation leakage from nuclear facilities in the country were revealed. Nevertheless, observers are concerned about the possibility that the enriched uranium can be stored somewhere and in the future to be re -used, exported by smuggling or sold, ”said the head of the Magate.

Grossi noted that the new Syrian administration is taking a firm position in matters of “openness to the world and international cooperation”, and expressed the hope that the process of inspections will end within a few months.

According to him, the Syria government agreed to provide the Magate immediate access to its former nuclear facilities.

“President Sharaa demonstrated a very constructive approach to interaction with the agency and expressed his readiness to ensure the implementation of the necessary work,” the head of the IAEA added.

“The president also informed me that he wants to study the possibilities of using nuclear energy in the future,” said Grossy.
