President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum sharply criticized the use of the Mexican flag in recent protests in the United States, calling this a “provocation” aimed at creating a negative image of the country.
According to The New York Times, the Sheinbaum in her statement emphasized that although Mexico’s flag has become a symbol of resistance to migration policy, its appearance in protests caused tension and can be perceived as a deliberate challenge.
“Obviously, it looks like a provocation and an attempt to form a negative perception of Mexico,” the president said. She added that she is trying to observe the balance between the protection of her citizens and the condemnation of violence.
The Shanbaum condemned the forceful methods of detention both in relation to the Mexicans and other migrants, noting that “such acts of violence are a clear provocation, and we do not know who is behind them”.
According to her, at least 61 Mexico citizens were detained in Los Angeles, some of them have already been deported. The President noted that many of them were refused the right to fair trial.
Turning to the Mexican diaspora in the United States, the Sheinbaum called on to avoid violence: “You have the right to oppose anything, but you must do it peacefully. Especially if you live in the USA.”
