Delegations of the defense ministries of the Russian Federation and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea met in Pyongyang to discuss issues of bilateral military cooperation.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the Russian delegation was headed by Deputy Defense Minister Viktor Goremykin.
At Pyongyang International Airport, the guests were met by Russian Ambassador to the DPRK Alexander Matsegora, Deputy Chief of the Main Political Directorate of the Korean People’s Army General Park Yong Il, military attache and other officials.
As part of the visit, the Russian delegation laid a wreath at the Liberation Monument – a symbol of victory over the Japanese occupiers. The content of the negotiations is not officially disclosed.
Deepening the Russian-North Korean partnership
In June 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an official visit to Pyongyang, which resulted in the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement.
The document came into force in December of the same year. In September, Putin and the leader of the DPRK Kim Jong-un held a working meeting in China.
Earlier, the National Intelligence Service of the Republic of Korea reported that the DPRK sent over 15 thousand troops to support Russian troops in the conflict with Ukraine. According to South Korean data, about 600 of them were killed, another 4 thousand were injured.
