Moldova President: referendum on European integration will determine present and future of country

A referendum on European integration will determine the present and future of Moldova for the next decades.

Such a statement was made on Monday, March 18, Moldova President Maya Sandu at a press conference, reports Moldipres.

The head of state emphasized that this year the Republic of Moldova will survive a turning point. “I want everyone to realize the importance of a referendum that will take place this fall. We had several rounds of discussion on a referendum. Citizens said that they saw the Republic of Moldova in a large European family,” Sandu said.

According to the president, European integration is a project of the people, so intentions should be disclosed by the people. The parliament should initiate the process of organizing a referendum, said Sandu.

“We all understand the advantages of integration in the EU. This country’s project unites society and is aimed at ensuring a peaceful and prosperous future. European integration is a historical opportunity. This is our chance of development and peace,” Maya Sandu said.

The President has listed the advantages of European integration of the country. “We are talking about a guaranteed world in the European Union, raising welfare and living standards, raising salaries and pensions, increasing life expectancy, guarantees of the rule of law, the development of infrastructure projects,” said Sandu.

20 rounds of discussions on the referendum topic have already taken place. More than 500 representatives of various communities and groups of the company took part in them. A referendum can be organized in the fall of this year. It was proposed by the head of state Maya Sandu.
