Almost 1.3 million people have become internally displaced people in Haiti as a result of violence by armed gangs. This is stated in the statement of the International Migration Organization (IMO) UN.
According to MOM, a record level of internal movement was recorded in Haiti: about 1.3 million people were forced to leave their homes, escaping from violence.
Since December 2024, the number of displaced persons increased by 24%, – the organization noted.
Director General of the MOM AMI POUP, whose words are given in the statement, emphasized that human destinies are behind these numbers:
“Children, mothers, elderly – many of them were forced to leave their homes more than once, often having nothing with them. Now they live in extremely unsafe and unstable conditions. We need to urgently act. This crisis cannot become a new norm,” said the POUP.
According to the UN estimates, in 2024, as a result of gang attacks on Haiti, more than 5600 people were killed.
Haiti continues to face a deep political, economic and humanitarian crisis. More than 80% of the territory of the capital of Port-O-Prens is controlled by armed groups. The population of the country exceeds 11 million people, and millions of them are faced with the threat of hunger.
