The municipal council of the city of Khumilya in the southeast of Spain approved the first ban on holding public events on the occasion of Muslim religious holidays, such as Ramazan and Kurban-Bayram.
The decision was made on the initiative of the VOX party, supported by the ruling people’s party. Step by the need for “protecting the identity of the local population.” Critics call the directive a violation of the right to freedom of religion.
The decision enters into force since 2026.
