NATO “patching holes” in Eastern Europe

NATO accelerated builds a base for thousands of soldiers on the southeastern border of Europe. The order was received after the start of the war in Ukraine, writes Bloomberg.

A few weeks after the start of the conflict, the members of the Alliance agreed at the Summit in Brussels on the creation of four new combat groups for Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia in addition to four, deployed in Poland and the Baltic states.

The process of building a base in the Romanian city of Chinka is headed by the French Colonel Clement Torrent. He and another 200 military personnel from France, Belgium and the Netherlands are now working in the Romanian region of Transylvania. “Our term is until the first frost,” he said. According to him, the new base will be familiar with the solidarity of the North Atlantic Alliance.

Six months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, NATO focused on how to prevent Russia from interfering in southeastern Europe and prevent Romania from becoming a vulnerable place of the Alliance.

Analyst Matthew Orra believes that Russia is now increasing the influence in the southeast of Europe, so NATO should “patch up” this gap safe. In particular, the capture of Romania under the control of the organization should restrain Russia in the Black Sea.

“The Black Sea itself is the gates of Russia into warm water, especially in the Mediterranean Sea,” said Julia Jodge, director of the Black Sea of the Washington Analytical Center of the Institute of the Middle East. – This is the gates of Russia to project power and strength into the Middle East, to Africa and beyond. “

The base in the rank should earn by the end of the year. It will be headed by the military from France.

Recently, NATO has significantly increased its presence on the eastern borders of Europe, throwing planes, ships and military there. Now the organization will create garrisons in the remaining border states. About 1000 soldiers of the alliance will constantly be there. In addition, allies will determine units at their military bases, which, if necessary, can quickly join the troops in eastern Europe.
