“We need to keep adapting for the future. And that is exactly what we will do at the Madrid Summit next year,” the Secretary General said. At the meeting, leaders will take important decisions to implement the ambitious NATO 2030 agenda, Mr. Stoltenberg explained, including boosting NATO’s resilience and cyber defences, sharpening its technological edge, and addressing the security impact of climate change.

The Alliance’s next Strategic Concept will also be adopted at the 2022 Summit, the Secretary General pointed out. “The Madrid Strategic Concept will reflect the new security environment, recommit to our values, and reaffirm our unity. Ensuring that our Alliance is fit for the future,” he said.

The Secretary General discussed Spain’s numerous contributions to NATO’s response to current security challenges with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation José Manuel Albares Bueno, and the Minister of Defence Margarita Robles. “For four decades, Spain has worked together with Allies on both sides of the Atlantic for a safer and more peaceful world,” Mr. Stoltenberg said.

He highlighted Spain’s strong support of NATO’s partnership with the European Union, which has led to unprecedented cooperation in recent years. “I am now working on a new joint declaration with President Von der Leyen and President Charles Michel by December this year,” the Secretary General said.
