NEPALISH climbers celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the first ascent to Everest – the highest peak of the world.
International Everest Day, which is celebrated annually on May 29, is dedicated to the first successful ascension to this mountain in 1953.
In honor of the anniversary organized by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation of Nepal, the Nepalen climbers gathered together to pay tribute to the pioneers.
“We celebrate May 29 as Everest’s Day, because the whole world should know about the achievements and contribution of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgei,” said Ang Tshering, head of Asian Trekking, one of the travel organizations specializing in Everest.
New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and Nepal Sherpa Tenzing Norgei were the first to reach the top of Everest on May 29, 1953. Since then, this date has been annually celebrated by the Nepal government as International Everest Day.
Hundreds of climbers storm the peak
This season, hundreds of climbers are attempting to climb Everest from the south side located on the territory of Nepal. The most suitable time for expeditions falls on April and May, when weather conditions are more stable and favorable for climbing.
Sherpas are the indigenous people of the Himalayas living between Nepal and Tibet. In Western languages, the word “Sherpa” is often used as a synonym for a mountain guide, since representatives of this people have exceptional skills in the mountains and often accompany foreign climbers on the ascent routes.
