New international airport will be built in Tbilisi

Georgian authorities decided to build a new airport in the capital of the country, Tbilisi. The country’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said this at a meeting of Cabinet.

The head of the Cabinet of Ministers said that a number of important decisions were made at the Economic Council this weekend.

The other day, a meeting of the Economic Council was held, at which we made the most important decision on the implementation of a new megaproject. Accordingly, a new international airport will be built in Tbilisi, ”said the head of the Georgian government.

The politician attracted attention to the fact that the country is expected to grow tourist flow, therefore the infrastructure should develop accordingly.

Kobahidze specified that at present the throughput of the Tbilisi airport is up to 4.5 million passengers per year.

According to the prime minister, the government considered two options for the project. One meant the expansion of the old airport, the other – the construction of a new airport in Vasani (a settlement near Tbilisi).

“The cost of expansion amounted to about $ 900 million. The construction price of a new one is approximately 1 billion 260 million dollars, – the head of government said.

“Expansion would allow an increase in passenger traffic to a maximum of 15 million passengers and there were no prospects for further development. As for the construction of a new one, this gives us the opportunity to increase the number of passengers to 19 million with the prospect of further expansion,” he explained.

Having taken everything into account, the government decided to build a new airport, the politician summed up. “Design and tender procedures will end next year,” the prime minister emphasized.
