About the Nobel Prizes

The Nobel Prizes, established by the will of the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel after his death on June 9, 1900, are considered one of the most prestigious awards in the world.

The Prizes are awarded by the Nobel Foundation for outstanding achievements in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, peace and medicine by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Swedish Academy, the Karolinska Institute and the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

The Nobel Prize in Economics was established later, in 1968, on the initiative of the Swedish Central Bank in memory of Alfred Nobel, and was first awarded in 1969 year.

Award ceremonies take place annually on December 10, the day of Alfred Nobel’s death. However, since the establishment of the prizes in 1901, there were several years when no awards were given. Additionally, ceremonies were not held in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
