On July 11, 1995, the city of Srebrenitsa, which was protected by the UN, was captured by the forces of the Bosnian Serbs under the command of General Ratko Mladic. After the capture, part of civilians – mostly women and children – was transferred to Serbs by the Dutch UN battalion, and at least 8,372 male Muslims were killed in the surrounding forests, warehouses and factories. Their bodies were buried in mass graves.

In 2007, the UN International Court in The Hague recognized these events with genocide. Investigations showed that the bodies of the dead were extracted from 77 fraternal burials and 150 different places, after which the victims were identified and, according to tradition every year on July 11, solemnly indulge in the earth.

Today, the remains of 6,765 people are buried at the Potocamari memorial cemetery, another 250 were devoted to the land in their native villages by decision of the families. The fate of more than a thousand missing still remains unknown.
