On Sri Lanka, protesters broke into office of Prime Minister

Participants in the protests on Sri Lanka broke into the office of Prime Minister Ranil Vikmasinghe in Colombo. Protesters demanded the resignation of the head of government, then tried to penetrate the building. In the region of 14:00, national flags were hung on the towers of the residence, people climbed onto the towers and the building itself, reports Izvestia.

The police used tear gas. At the same time, vodoets stood near the prime minister’s office – but they did not dare to use their forces, the agency reports.

Mass protests in the capital of Sri Lanka began on July 9 amid a deterioration in the socio-economic situation. Then they grew into disorder. The demonstrators captured the residence of the President of Sri Lanka Gotabayi Rajapax. The head of state managed to leave it a few minutes before the assault. Later, the participants in the shares entered the territory of the residence of the Prime Minister Ranil Vikmasingha and set fire to the building.

On July 13, Gotabay Rajapax signed a resignation statement from the post of president and left the country. According to AFP, the politician flew away with his wife and guards on the An-32 military aircraft. The current Prime Minister of the country was appointed temporarily acting president. On the same day, the Sri Lanka authorities introduced a state of emergency on the territory of the state.

On July 20, the parliament will hold the elections of the new president, after which the Provisional Government will be appointed, which will work before the following universal elections.
