Orban scarf caused scandal in Romania

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban fell into the scandal as part of the World Cup 2022, appearing in public in a scarf depicting a map of the “Great Hungary”, which “included” part of Ukraine and Romania, Ukrainian media write.

In such a scarf, Orban came to a meeting with a football player Balazh Jujak, who held a farewell match for the national team. The video, where he is in a fan scarf next to the football player, posted Orban himself in social networks.

The Romania Foreign Ministry has already reacted to the act of the Hungarian prime minister, Romanian media write. The agency handed over to Hungary in Bucharest the “solid disapproval” of the act of Orban. They stated that “such a gesture is in obvious contrast with the atmosphere of openness and the resumption of bilateral dialogue over the recent consultations that the Romanian Foreign Minister spent in Budapest both with the Hungarian colleague and the Hungarian Prime Minister.”

A German liberal politician, deputy of the European Parliament Daniel Froind, drew attention to the ambiguous clothing item of Hungary. “The Prime Minister of Hungary is in a scarf with a map of” Great Hungary. “As a soothing for the neighbors of Hungary,” Froind wrote.

The term “Great Hungary” denot the lands that were part of the Hungarian kingdom. The country lost these territories more than 100 years ago after defeat in the First World War.
