Paris Agreement accelerated steps of Turkey to combat climate change

The adoption of the law on the approval of the Paris Climate Agreement Accelerated the Steps of Turkey to Combat Climate Change. This opinion was expressed by the teacher of the Department of Nature Management and Environmental Engineering of Technical University Yyldyz Doctor of Sciences Levent Kuzu.

The Turkish parliament approved the law on the approval of the Paris Climate Agreement on October 6, 2021.

In an interview with Anadol, Kuzu noted that one of the important points of the Paris Agreement is an obligation to hold an increase in the global average temperature at a level below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre -industrial indicators, and also strive to not rise above 1.5 degrees.

According to him, today global warming is already 1.1 degrees compared to the pre -industrial level.

Kuzu noted that the biggest step taken with the adoption of the law in the Turkish parliament was the renaming of the “Ministry of Environment and Urbanization” to the “Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Changes”.

“The inclusion of the climate on the agenda is the most important result of Turkey’s steps to combat climate change,” he said.

The scientist recalled that along with the renaming of the ministry, the climate control department was also created with him.

“Management is engaged in conducting research on the climate change, determines plans, politics and strategies. It has become an important organization that implements serious strategies for climate change,” said Kuza.

At the same time, the Turkish scientist attracted attention to the issue of climate modeling, which, according to him, should form the basis of strategies and plans of action.

According to Kuzu, climate modeling is a difficult engineering solution and, as a rule, universities and research institutes are engaged in this problem.

Turkey accounts for less than 1 percent of the global carbon dioxide emissions, Kuza added.

The Paris Agreement was adopted on December 12, 2015 at the 21st session of the conference of the parties to the UN Frame Convention on Climate Change. Türkiye was one of the 175 countries that supported the adoption of this document in Paris.

The Paris Agreement entered into force on November 4, 2016, on the thirtieth day after the 55 parties to the UN Convention on Climate, which accounted for at least 55 percent of the total global emissions of greenhouse gases, presented their documents about its ratification, acceptance, approval or accession.
