Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sanchez, opposing the offer to increase defense costs to 5 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), which is one of the priority issues of the NATO summit, said that his country will remain the key country in the defense of NATO.
In his publication on the social network, X Sanchez shared photographs from the NATO summit, which takes place in the Hague.
“Spain is and will remain a key player in European and transatlantic defense architecture. This is our obligation, and I will emphasize it once again at the NATO summit today,” he said.
In the statement of June 22, Prime Minister Prime Minister said that Madrid opens against the requirements of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and US President Donald Trump to increase defense costs to 5 % of GDP on the grounds that this is “incompatible with the social state and the worldview of Spain.”
NATO Secretary General and US President Trump responded to Sanchez that Spain agreed to increase their defense costs to 2.1 % of GDP.
On the way to the Summit in Gaga, Trump said on an airplane: “Spain is a problem. NATO has problems with them, and this is a great injustice towards other partners.”
