Plan of Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania will be signed next week

The Defense Ministers of Lithuania and Germany on Monday, December 18 in Vilnius will sign a plan for placing a Bundeswehr brigade.

“On December 18, the Ministry of National Defense of Lithuania will be signed by the Lithuanian-German action plan (” Roadmap “), which sets out the intentions of both countries regarding the placement of the German brigade in Lithuania and subsequent steps for its complete deployment. The plan will be signed by the Minister of Defense of Lithuania Arvidas Anushauskas and Minister of Defense of Germany Boris Pistorius, ”the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Lithuania reports.

A action plan (“Roadmap”) was prepared by a joint working group of ministries of defense of Germany and Lithuania.

Germany intends to deploy a heavy brigade with three maneuverable battalions and all the necessary funds, including combat support units.

The German brigade in Lithuania will consist of existing and newly formed parts. The 203rd tank battalion from the Northern Rhine-Westphalia and the 122nd Bavaria Armored Infantry Batalion will be transferred to Lithuania, the department said.

Germany intends to place a heavy brigade in Lithuania with three maneuverable battalions and all the necessary security equipment, including combat support and supply units. The core of the brigade will be tank and motorized rifle battalions. The third maneuverable battalion will initially consist of a combat group of the NATO advanced forces already located in Lithuania under the command of Germany.

In total, Germany intends to place about 5 thousand soldiers and civilians in the brigade in Lithuania, some with families. The gradual arrival of the units will begin in 2024, in full force the brigade will be posted by 2027.

Earlier, the media reported that the Lithuanian government approved the plan for the establishment of the coordination commission to receive the Brigade of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Germany in the republic.

Anushauskas said that the commission will ensure the smooth deployment of the brigade. It will be collected as necessary to discuss the process, possible problems and solutions during the deployment of a German brigade.
