The Russian private military company Wagner announced the completion of its activities in Mali, where its forces have been for more than three years.
In the official statement, Wagner noted that the operation in the West African country was “successfully completed”.
According to the report, during the struggle with armed groups, control over all regional centers of Mali was returned to the Malian military leadership. The rebel formations were discarded, and many of their commanders were neutralized.
Local media notes that after Wagner’s departure, the new player on the field will be the formation of the Africa Corps, which will continue to continue operations in the country.
The Sachel region, including the border areas of Burkina-Faso, Mali and Niger, in recent years has become an arena of attacks of terrorist groups associated with al-Qaeda and deash.
Mali has been fighting with these terrorist threats since 2013. After criticism of civil authorities for the inability to ensure security in the country, the military came to power as a result of the coup.
In 2013, France sent troops to Mali to stabilize the situation, but in 2022 they were withdrawn. After that, the Malian military leadership began cooperation with the Russian PMC “Wagner”.
