Poland withdrew its ambassador from Budapest and reduced the level of diplomatic relations with Hungary to the level of the attorney in business.
According to the Polish media reports, by decision of the Poland Foreign Ministry, the ambassador to Budapest Sebastian Kenchek stopped fulfilling the authority since July 15.
The representative of the Poland Foreign Ministry Pavel Vroni, commenting on the situation, said that at the moment Poland was presented in Hungary at the level of the attorney in business, while he refused to take forecasts regarding further steps.
“Contrary to the principle of mutual loyalty adopted in the European Union, Hungary provided political asylum to the former deputy minister of justice Marcin Romanovsky, against whom financial and criminal charges were made. Moreover, Romanovsky himself had previously stated that he would fulfill all the challenges of the prosecutor’s office,” said Vroni, speaking about the reasons for the responding to Sebastian Kenchek.
Out of Hungary
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Hungary Peter Siyyarto said that Budapest is striving for strong ties with Poland, however, according to him, the government in Warsaw does not show interest in this.
Siyyarto emphasized that the Hungarian side has always respected the Polish ambassadors in Budapest.
At the same time, the head of the department is convinced that cooperation between the two countries should not depend exclusively on the discrepancies in views on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“They are a government supporting the war, and we are a government that acts for peace. Nevertheless, cooperation is still possible,” the minister added.

The Polish prosecutor’s office nominated against Marcin Romanovsky, who held the post of deputy minister of justice of the country in 2019-2023, a number of accusations, including “participating in an organized criminal group” and “attempt to assign state funds.”
Romanovsky rejected the charges and in December 2024 went to Hungary, where he filed a petition for political asylum. The Hungarian government granted his request.
This step from Hungary caused tension in relations between the two countries.
