Poland wants to create one of strongest armies on eastern flank of NATO

After the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war, Poland, wanting to create one of the strongest armies on the eastern flank of NATO, increases its military expenses to solve security problems.

Poland, which over the past two years has made large investments in the defense industry and signed a number of agreements on the supply of weapons with countries such as South Korea and the United States, seeks to become one of the strongest armies of Europe.

Given the security threats with the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the military expenses of the Polish government by the end of this year can reach 130 billion zlotys (27.7 billion euros). This figure corresponds to 4 percent of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP), which is the highest indicator among NATO members.

It is expected that by 2035 the country will spend a total of 524 billion zlotys on military spending (117.6 billion euros).

Polish Defense Minister Mariuszhak in July 2022 said: “The Kremlin will not attack a strong country. If they see a weak place, they will attack there. As for artillery and armored units, there will be no stronger country in Europe than than Poland. Among the NATO countries in Europe, we will have the most powerful ground forces. “

After the Russian attack on Ukraine in the Polish media, reports began to appear that the country was in danger.

A few weeks after the outbreak of the war, on April 5, 2022, Warsaw signed an agreement for about 5 billion euros for the purchase of 250 American Abrams tanks.

In July 2022, the Polish authorities signed another agreement with South Korea, which implies the purchase of 1000 K2 Black Panther tanks and 672 howitzers K9 Thunder.

In November 2022, Poland reached an agreement with South Korea on the purchase of 218 missile systems K239 Chunmoo.

Minister Blashchak on February 8 announced that the United States approved Warsaw’s sale of about 500 Himars volley rocket systems.

– the naval forces will also be strengthened

Poland, whose coastline on the Baltic Sea partially borders on Russia, recently took measures to strengthen its naval forces.

After the start of the war, Poland signed an agreement with the British weapons manufacturer in the amount of 1.4 billion pounds (1.65 billion euros) for the supply of three new frigates.

MIECZNIK warships, which will be built in Poland, will be similar to Type 31 Royal Navy frigates. Poland also intends to strengthen the Navy underwater ships.

The Polish army also seeks to increase the personnel of the Armed Forces. It is aimed at increasing the number of military personnel by 2035, which amounted to 150 thousand last year, at least up to 300 thousand.

At this time, the personnel of the Poland Armed Forces is 172 thousand military personnel.
