Population of Japan is reduced by thirteenth year in row

By October 2023, the population of Japan amounted to 124.35 million people, which is 595 thousand less than in the previous year. This is evidenced by the data of the Ministry of Administrative Affairs and Communications of the country.

According to the department, the indicator decreases the thirteenth year in a row.

From October 2022 to October 2023, the number of residents of Japan with citizenship of the country decreased by 837 thousand people, which became the largest fall since 1950.

The number of elderly people over 65 years old in Japan reached 36.4 million people – this is a record 29.1% of the total population.
