President Of Madagascar, In His Address To Nation, Emphasized Importance Of Respecting Constitution

Resolving the current crisis in Madagascar is only possible through “respect and protection of the constitution.” This was stated by the President of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, addressing the nation amid weeks of anti-government protests and rumors of a possible coup.

In his video message published on social networks, the President pointed out the only way to solve problems – “compliance with the current constitution”, and also once again called on citizens for national unity and dialogue.

“To preserve the unity of our country and overcome this crisis, we must be open to dialogue,” Rajoelina emphasized.

In addition, the head of state confirmed that he was in a “safe place” for security reasons, but did not specify where exactly.

The protests that began a few weeks ago due to power outages and water supply, quickly escalated into anti-government protests demanding the resignation of the president.

Against the backdrop of a deteriorating economic situation, popular discontent intensified. Government buildings were attacked by protesters, and in some areas there were clashes between army units and demonstrators.

The elite army unit – the Association for the Support of the Protection of Public Services and Local Self-Government (CAPSAT) – declared its solidarity with the protesters.

According to the latest data, during protests killed at least 22 people and hundreds were injured.

According to French radio RFI, due to growing security threats, the President of Madagascar left the country on a French military plane after agreeing on the move with French President Emmanuel Macron.

It is reported that he was first flown to Reunion Island, and then transported with his family to undisclosed location.
