The ruling party led by President Javier Miley won the parliamentary elections in Argentina.
According to Argentine media, after 96% of the ballots were counted, Miley’s party La Libertad Avanza (Moving Forward Freedom) received 39% of the votes and emerged victorious elections.
The opposition Peronist bloc Fuerza Patria (“Strength of the Motherland”) was able to gain only 29.4% of the vote.
The Milea party achieved success in key regions such as the capital Buenos Aires, as well as the provinces of Cordoba, Santa Fe and Mendoza.
The opposition had previously achieved victory in the regional elections on September 7, unexpectedly suffered defeat in Buenos Aires.
Thanks to these results, the ruling party has a significant advantage in implementing reforms and neutralizing the opposition’s attempts to block presidential decrees.
Despite the fact that La Libertad Avanza won 6 of the 8 electoral districts in the Senate, it has not yet managed to achieve required one-third of the seats to implement austerity policies.
Turnout was 67.85%, the lowest since the return of democracy in Argentina in 1983.
“We must continue on the path of reform.”
Speaking at party headquarters in Buenos Aires, Miley stressed that the new Congress will play a decisive role in changing the course of the country:
“Today is, without a doubt, a historic day for Argentina. In the next two years, we must continue the path of reform that we have begun,” he said.
The President noted the need for transformation for the growth and development of the country:
“From December 10, we will, without a doubt, have the most reformative Congress in history Argentina,” added Miley.
Political and social consequences
According to the national press, the victory of the ruling party in a number of provinces in the Chamber of Deputies will allow Miley to push through economic and structural reforms with greater confidence.
However, the lack of one-third of the seats in the Senate limits the president’s ability to block or reject separate bills.
The traditionally strong Peronist parties temporarily weakened their political influence after the defeat in Buenos Aires.
Meanwhile, Miley’s radical rhetoric and far-right economic promises increased both support and opposition in society.
