Sanda proposed to rename state language in Moldova

Moldova President Maya Sanda suggested a parliament to consider amending the Constitution to official renaming the state language from Moldavian to Romanian, reports RIA Novosti.

In fact, we are about the same language, since Moldavian is considered the official dialect of Romanian. Minor differences between them are observed at the level of the literary norm, phonetics and vocabulary. In the Declaration of Independence of the Republic, the official language of the state called Romanian, while the Constitution of the country determines it as Moldavian.

According to Sanda, amendments to the main law of the country about the language of power obliges the decision of the Constitutional Court (COP) from 2017, but so far the parliament has not considered a single similar initiative. “The problem will be solved, we have already created programs so that people can learn and use Romanian language,” the president said. At the same time, she stressed that the authorities will try to do everything possible to preserve the languages of the national minorities in the country – Gagauz and Ukrainian.

Against the renaming of the state language in Moldova is the former president of the country and the leader of the Socialist Party Igor Dodon. He repeatedly stated that Moldavian and Romanian were two different languages, and also offered to make a question about this for a national referendum.
