Senegal: on eve of elections, opposition leaders were released from prison

The Opposition leader Senegal Usman Sonko, who was in custody since July 2023, as well as a candidate for the upcoming presidential election to the Basser Diomaye Fi released.

Sonko and Fi contained in the Cap Manuel prison in Dakar were released at night as part of the amnesty law.

Sonko’s supporters who received the news of his liberation, filled the streets near the prison and house of the opposition leader.

Sonko and Fay, who left the prison and accompanied by a large motorcade, headed to the Sonko house, located in the area of ​​Cite Keur Gourgi.

Sonko’s supporters blocked almost all the roads leading to this area, festive events took place in many parts of Dakar.

The leader of the Opposition Sonko was detained on July 28, 2023 for forcibly selected a mobile phone from a gendarmerie employee who wanted him to record him. Before the incident, Sonko called his supporters on social networks to protests.

A Sonko was given an arrest warrant on charges of “calling for an uprising.” Soon after his arrest, the Pastef party was also dissolved.

Sonko himself lost the right to run for the presidency, while the Basser Diomaye Fi retained this opportunity.

FI was also arrested during street incidents associated with Sonko in 2023.

The FAYA election campaign, while he was in prison, was led by his supporters.

The presidential election in Senegal will be held on March 24. The election campaign, starting on March 9, will end on March 22.
