Somali Refugees Fight For Survival Against Backdrop Of Hunger And Conflict

Somali residents, who are forced to leave their homes due to hunger and armed conflict, are trying to survive in difficult conditions in camps for immigrants in Mogadisho.

Forced migration covered thousands of Somalians who fled from their regions due to hunger caused by drought, and the continuing many years of confrontation between government forces and armed groups associated with the Ash Shabaab terrorist organization.

The correspondent of the Anadolu agency captured difficult living conditions in the camps on the outskirts of the capital of the country.

Millions of internally displaced persons throughout the somali expect the end of the conflict and international humanitarian aid.

In almost all refugee camps, including the Al -Hidai camp near Mogadisho, where about 5,000 people are fighting for survival, there are no basic infrastructure conditions – electricity, water supply and sewage.

People live in home -made tents built from tarpaulin and improvised materials. Access to clean water is extremely limited: it is delivered from remote areas in plastic canister. The streets of the camps are polluted, which exacerbates the sanitary situation.

Due to extreme poverty and high unemployment, the inhabitants of the camps depend on humanitarian assistance and donations to satisfy the basic needs – in food, clothes and water.

There is a serious threat of the spread of epidemics, such as typhoid, dysentery, hepatitis and cholera. Most camps do not have medical institutions, and children are deprived of access to education.

Camp resident Maria Herm Hert Muhammad said that “life is very difficult here, and we do not even have money for medicines when someone gets sick.”

Fatima Abdullah, another resident of the camp, noted that they have no kitchen, and often – there is nothing to cook.

Meriem Leila emphasized that not only access to food, water and medical care is not in the camp, but also any possibilities for obtaining education.
