Last week, the Kiev police arrested a gang of foreigners led by Israelis with Russian “roots”. The extortion of tourists has become a familiar thing for local restaurants and bars and led to numerous warnings in tourist groups and on sites.

According to the agency, since the beginning of 2020, the gang conducted a scam from about 150 tourists. It is specified that the waiters and the owner of the institution were in collusion with fraudsters: the staff filed foreigners in the amount, ten times larger than the real cost of food, which they ordered independently or with the help of the owner of the catering point – thus forcing tourists to pay for thousands of dollars. If tourists refused to pay, the gang members led them to the office of the manager and there forced to pay with violence or psychological pressure. If they still refused, the gang robbed them, taking money, mobile phones and jewels.

According to the district prosecutor’s office, the leader and citizen of Israel have already been wanted by Interpol for banking scams. Law enforcement officers also reported that among the arrested gang members were citizens of Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

As the general prosecutor of Kiev noted, the grouping intimidated visitors, therefore it was counting that they would not complain to the police, and law enforcement agencies would be engaged in crimes. Currently, the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office is working to learn tourists with a special status, which would allow them to testify without returning to Ukraine.
