Spain: can pardon leaders of Catalan separatists

Government of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is going to pardon the nine leaders of the Catalan separatists who have received prison time after an attempt to branch Catalonia in 2017. It is reported by the Russian BBC service.

“Tomorrow, guided by the spirit of forgiveness, laid in our Constitution, I will suggest the Cabinet to approve the pardon. To agree, almost always one of one should take the first step. The Government of Spain will make such a step,” Sanchez announced on Monday Barcelona.

After the referendum announced by Catalans declared and independent declarations in 2017, the central authorities of Spain were sent to court 12 separatist leaders. Nine of them received prison terms – from seven to 11 years – for “incitement to meat”.

The head of the Government of Catalonia Carles Puchdemon fled from the court and prison in Belgium and later was chosen, not appearing in his homeland, to the European Parliament. At the beginning of the year, the European Parliament took off with him and his two companions of inviolability, and now they are threatened with issuing to Spain.

The question of the pardon of the Catalan leaders is discussed in Spain for a long time, and the Government of Sanchez is inclined to the fact that such a step will reduce the tension in Madrid and Barcelona relations.
