Speaker of Turkish parliament rejected charges of Cyprus-Greek side

Prague (AA) – Chairman of the Great National Assembly (Parliament) of Turkey Mustaf Schentop hassle the statement of the head of the Assembly of the Greek administration of the Southern Cyprus Annita Dimitriu.

Dimitri, during a speech at the conference of the speakers of the Parliaments of the European Union (EUSC), compared the Turkish Armed Forces in 1974 in 1974 to maintain peace in Cyprus with the war of the Russian Federation in Ukraine.

Schentop called this kind of comparison “an extremely low -grade distortion of facts.”

According to him, Dimitri made unreasonable and illegal accusations against Turkey.

Schentop emphasized that Turkey sent the military to Cyprus to protect its compatriots from the massacre.

The speaker noted that Turkey did this by taking advantage of its rights as a guarantee country, enshrined in the 1959 Zurich-London Agreements, formed the basis of the Treaty on the creation of the Republic of Cyprus.

According to him, today many Cypriots-Greas condemn the massacre and genocide, which the Turkish community of the island was subjected to until 1974.

Schentop added that Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus have repeatedly declared their desire for a fair settlement of Cyprus problem. The speaker stated that, contrary to this, the Cyprus-Greek side “rejected the will of the two communities to peace and coexistence.”

The head of the Turkish parliament also accused the EU of not fulfilling his obligations to Cypriots-Turks.

“The fact that such accusations are still voiced is a confirmation of my words that the EU is captured by unrealistic approaches that prevent him from developing their strategic perspective,” said Schentop.
