Sri Lanka may ban hijabs

The Government of Sri Lanka will discuss the possibility of banning in the country the wearing of especially closed forms of the hijab – Muslim clothing that hides the face and body. The Associated Press news agency reports.

Zarat Virasekara, the Minister of Public Security of the country, which suffered greatly at the hands of terrorists two years ago, said that he was waiting for the approval of this ban from the Cabinet of Ministers. The government noted that they are still discussing such a decision.

A ban on burqa hijabs in Sri Lanka was already temporarily introduced in 2019 after Islamic State-sworn terrorists attacked Christian churches and hotels with pilgrims on Easter Day, killing hundreds of people.

It is also reported that the country’s authorities are contemplating the closure of about a thousand Islamic schools – they do not fit into the laws on secondary education. Muslims make up approximately 9 percent of the country’s population.
