In Tajikistan, June 27 celebrates the Day of National Unity – a public holiday that marked the completion of civil conflict and the transition to peaceful development.
President of the state Emomali Rahmon in different years has repeatedly emphasized that national unity remains a strategic basis of Tajik statehood and the key to the country’s sustainable development.
According to the president, national unity is a conscious choice of the people, thanks to which Tajikistan has come out of the deepest crisis, retained statehood and followed the path of peace and creation.
On the eve of the holiday in all regions of the country, as well as in ministries and departments, solemn meetings are held dedicated to the significance of national unity in modern challenges.
A comprehensive agreement between the Tajik government and the united Tajik opposition was signed on June 27, 1997 in Moscow through the mediation of Russia, Iran, the UN and other international actors.
The document laid an end to an almost five -year armed confrontation, during which, according to various estimates, tens of thousands of people were killed.
The agreement provided for the creation of the Institute of National Reconciliation, the participation of the opposition in political life and the reform of state structures. International organizations have repeatedly noted Tajik experience as an example of successful domestic political settlement in the post -Soviet space.
Since 1998, the Day of National Unity has been officially included in the list of public holidays and has been celebrated annually throughout the country.
Festive events on this day are held not only in Tajikistan, but also in countries where representatives of the Tajik diaspora live.
