More than 16 million of Iraq’s 46 million population are children and adolescents aged 0 to 14 years. This was announced by Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning Mohammed Taimim.
Speaking at a press conference in Baghdad, Taimim presented details of the national census conducted last year. He recalled that the previous census took place 37 years ago.
“Perhaps this census will be the last one conducted using traditional methods. Subsequent censuses will be based on a registration system,” the minister noted.
According to the results of the calculations, at the time of the census, 46,118,793 citizens of the country and 340,131 foreign citizens lived in Iraq. The total number of households was 8,054,385.
Teymim reported that there are 23.161 million (50.2%) men and 22.957 million (49.8%) women. “The number of households headed by men exceeds 7 million, while the number of households headed by women is more than 910 thousand,” he said.
The minister added that in a number of southern provinces the average number of family members is higher than in the western and northern regions of the country. The overall rate of population growth in the country was 2.5%.
The size of the 0-14 age group reached 16,555,000 people, corresponding to 35.9% of the population. “These data show how young the Iraqi population is,” Teimim noted.
The number of people of working age (15-64 years) amounted to 60.4% of the population. The number of citizens 65 years of age and older is 1,688,000, representing 3.6%.
A nationwide population census was conducted in Iraq on November 20, 2024.
