Trump: Peaceful Efforts Between Armenia And Azerbaijan Are Moving To “successful Completion”

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the efforts to reach a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan seem to be moving towards a “successful completion.”

“We have a theme of Armenia and Azerbaijan. It seems that the matter is being completed – a successful conclusion,” Trump said at a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in an oval office.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan held a meeting last week in the UAE, where the parties agreed on the continuation of bilateral relations.

Relations between the two former Soviet republics have remained tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Karabakh and seven adjacent regions – an international recognized part of Azerbaijan.

Most of the territory was liberated by Azerbaijan during the 44-day war in the fall of 2020, which ended after the signing, through the mediation of Russia, which opened the way to negotiations on normalization and demarcation.

In September 2023, Azerbaijan established a complete sovereignty in Karabakh after the separatist forces in the region surrendered.

March 13, Baku and Yerevan said that they had reached a consensus under all 17 articles of a peace agreement, although the contract has not yet been signed.
