Tunisian court to arrest speaker of country’s parliament

The court in Tunisia decided on the arrest of the chairman of the Parliament of Tunisia, the leader of the An-Nahda movement Rashid al-Ghannushi.

The politician was detained on April 17, security forces broke into his house right during Iftar (evening conversation, eating during the Muslims of the month of Ramazan).

The interrogation in the prosecutor’s office lasted 48 hours. On the morning of April 20, al-Ghannushi was arrested by court decision.

The lawyer of the An-Nahda movement Khabib Bin Sidhum said on social networks that in addition to al-Ghannushi, the defendants are another 11 people, everyone is accused of “trying to undermine state security”.

by the decision of the same trial, one of the influential functionaries of the An-Nahda Muhammad al-Kumani and Bilkasim Hassan and six more movements will remain free at the time of the trial.

In response to the arrest of Al-Ghannushi in the An-Nahde, they called on the opposition to unite in the struggle against violations of the rights and freedoms of opposition politicians.

Tunisian authorities did not make statements regarding what exactly al-Ghannushi was accused of.
