Turkey: vote ended in second round of presidential election

In Turkey on Sunday, May 28, for the first time in the history of the republic, a second round of voting in the presidential election was held.

Voting at polling stations in the country ended, the calculation of the ballots began.

Power stations opened at 08:00 and closed at 17:00 local time.

Throughout the country, over 191 thousand electoral urns were established.

The number of voters exceeds 60 million people.

According to the results of the first round of voting on May 14, none of the candidates gained 50 percent of the vote, and the candidate from the “Union of People”, the current president Recep Tayyip Erdogan (49.52 percent of the vote) and the candidate from ” Union of the Nation “, leader of the Republican People’s Party Kemal Kylychdaroglu (44.88 percent).

Candidate from the Bloc “Alliance of the Ata” Sinan Ogan, who drew 5.17 percent of votes on May 14, called on supporters to support Erdogan’s candidacy in the second round.

The counting of votes began after the closing of polling stations at 17:00 local time.

For voters who, due to health reasons, could not come to polling stations, “Mobile Urns” functioned.

The vote for Turkish citizens living abroad ended on May 24. In 73 countries and the checkpoint voted in general 3.5 million voters.

Electoral urns from abroad were delivered to Ankara on aircraft and diplomatic mail. They will be opened on Sunday evening, along with other urns after the end of the vote.

The ban on broadcasting on the results of the elections will be valid until 21:00 Sunday, May 28. By decision of the CEC, the period of the ban can be removed earlier than the time established by law.
