Turkish grandmaster Ediz Gewel in the 7th round of the tournament in Samarkand (Uzbekistan), after a tense struggle, defeated the world champion Dommaraj Gukesh, having achieved historical success, the Turkish chess federation reports.
Ediz became the first Turkish chess player to defeat the current champion Mira.
In the tournament, which will end on September 15, Turkey is also represented by Yagyz Kaan Erdogmush. After the 7th round, both Turkish chess players have 4 points each and continue to struggle for prizes.
The first two places in the tournament give the right to participate in the “Candidate Tournament 2026”, which determines the rival of the world.
